A dog is a type of domesticated carnivorous mammal that characteristically has a long nose, with a strong sense of smell, and a barking voice. Moreover, the first domesticated animal in the animal species are dogs, and have been reared by humans for quite a long period. Despite the variation in dogs in terms of shapes, size and color, dogs perform seemingly the same roles, including providing security, pulling loads, hunting and herding. Dogs also perform duties which some seem impossible. Some these duties include, providing military companionship, assisting the physically disabled people as well as offering therapeutic duties. Universally, the most common types of dogs include the guard dogs, working dogs, hunting dogs, companion dogs, and herding dogs.
The most basic command that every dog owner needs to teach his/her dog include the sit, come, down, stay, and leave it command. When training a dog, it is essential to start with the sit command since it Is considered as the easiest dog respect command to teach. When training the sit command, the dog owner need to follow the following steps, these include, holding a treat close to the dog’s nose, this is followed by moving the hand upward and allowing the dog`s head to trail the treat and causing its back to move downwards, once the dog is in a sitting position, the instructor needs to say sit. Once the dog has mastered the sit command, the owner needs to train the dog to sit before mealtime, when leaving for walks, and during situations that the owner would like the dog to calm and seated.
The steps involved in training a dog the down command include, looking for a good smelling food and holding it tight in their hand closer to the dog`s nose to ensure that the dog sniffs it, then one needs to move their hand to the floor so that the dog follow, once the dog`s` head is on the floor, one needs to slide their hand along the ground in front of the dog so as to encourage the dog`s` body to move forward and follow its head, once the dog is in a down position, the owner need to say down and the give the dog the food.
Once a dog has learned the down command, on need to train the dog the stay command, the steps involved include, asking the dog to sit, this is followed by opening palm of their hand in front of the dog and then say stay, then take a few steps back and give the dog food if it stays. It is advisable to train a dog the leave it command since it can prevent a dog from harm in the event that it wants to smell something hazardous.
