NLRI called out to assist at Uganda Railways ferry accident

On the 8th May 2005, at 11h37 (Local time), the Uganda Railways cargo ferry MV Kabalega foundered in 150 feet of water, 15kms south east of the Ssese Islands (some 60kms from Kampala) on Lake Victoria, in Ugandan territorial waters. At approximately 3am earlier the same morning, under what remain unclear circumstances, she struck her sister ship the MV Kawa, suffering it is believed, severe damage below the waterline just forward of the accommodation super structure.

A full commission of enquiry was ordered by the Minister for Transport. It would be prejudicial for us to make comment on any part of this incident until the report is made public, at which time this page will be fully updated. What is in the public domain is that the Managing Director of URA and his Board Secretary have not had their contracts of employment renewed.

Lake Rescue responded to the call within one hour of it being received at approximately 09h00, however, the Kabalega sank, well before our possible arrival on scene. The MV Kawa also suffered damage to her bow as can be seen from the photos but remained afloat and was escorted back to Port Bell by Lake Rescue with the Police Marine Command onboard and CAA fast rescue boats
