The Challenges That Women Face When Seeking Help in a Rehabilitation Center
Women face various challenges when it comes to rehabilitation and drug abuse. Other than alcohol and substance abuse, women find that they also abuse prescription pain killers. Women are also known to be prone to the developing conditions such as the post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. This is the reason that the rehab centers have realized the needs that women have and are restructuring their program to meet the needs that women have.
Of the many challenges that women face when seeking treatment is finances. This is higher in women who have improvised backgrounds and have many children. Rehabilitation is expensive, and most of them do not accommodate women who are expectant or single mothers. The challenge is that most of these women fail to have the proper support system to help them deal with the issue of addiction. Even in the situation where the arrangements have been made, these women face resistance from their spouse, boyfriend, and even the family.
Women who are addicted are more alienated and stigmatized compared to men. These women do not get any confidence and support from their relatives. Due to fear of judgment these women prefer to hide the fact that they use substance instead of seeking treatment.
Despite the fact that a majority of ladies might seek treatment to substance abuse, in most case they do not complete the inpatient rehab program. They do this because the program is designed in such a way that it suits the men. The program is designed to have harsh measures is taken by the patient since a majority of men never accept the fact that they need help. It might be that this method is ideal for men, but the environment is too harsh for women.
When dealing with women, one should keep in mind that they are known to react inwardly towards their problem. They feel guilty and embarrassed when they find that they are doing something which is not right. They might end up over protecting themselves and emotions if they get harsh approach. The fact that there are fewer women working in the rehabilitation homes, makes the situation even worse for women who are seeking treatment. For women, it is easy for them to open up to someone of the same gender.
Most of these facilities are now trying to change so that they can have a package that suits both men and women. They are doing this so that they ensure that the needs of women have been met. However, there is a lot of work that needs to be done so that many women can be encouraged to seek treatment.
